Vasota Trek Packing List: What to Carry (and What to Skip)

Trekkers walking the jungle trail to Vasota Fort

You do not need expedition gear for Vasota — but the right shoes and enough water make the difference between a great day and a tiring one. Here is the exact list we send every group, refined over hundreds of trips.

The non-negotiables

  • Trekking shoes or sturdy sports shoes with grip. The trail is a real forest path — roots, loose soil, occasional rock. Avoid flat-soled sneakers and brand-new shoes. Break them in before the trip.
  • 2 litres of water per person (3 in March–May). There are no shops on the trail. A reusable bottle is best; the boat and camp have drinking water for refills.
  • Cap or hat + sunscreen. The boat crossing is fully exposed, and the summit has open stretches.
  • Personal medicines. Carry what you personally need — altitude-style medication is unnecessary, but your own prescriptions, an anti-allergic, and a basic painkiller are sensible.
  • A small backpack. One 15–25 litre daypack per 1–2 people is plenty for water, snacks, and a layer.

Clothes: keep it simple

  • Quick-dry t-shirt + track pants or shorts you can walk 6 km in. Avoid jeans — they chafe when you sweat.
  • A light jacket or shawl for winter (Nov–Feb) early mornings on the boat.
  • An extra set of clothes if you are camping overnight — you will appreciate dry clothes after the trek.
  • Slippers or sandals for the camp in the evening; your feet will thank you.

For the overnight camp

Good news: the camp provides tents, bedding, dinner, breakfast, the bonfire, and lighting. You only add:

  • Extra clothes + a warm layer (nights by the water get cool even in summer)
  • Torch or headlamp (phones work, but a torch is easier around camp)
  • Power bank — there is no charging point at the tents
  • Toiletries and a towel; keep them minimal

What NOT to carry

  • No cooking gear, no tents, no sleeping bags. It is a fully managed camp — that is the whole point.
  • No alcohol excess. A quiet evening drink culture is fine, but the site is a family camp inside a sanctuary; loud parties are not.
  • No plastic litter. Carry a small bag for your own wrappers. The sanctuary is protected forest — leave nothing behind.
  • No drones without forest permission. Ask us before you plan aerial shots.

Documents

Carry a government photo ID for each adult (Aadhaar, driving licence, or similar). Our host handles the forest entry permission at Bamnoli, but IDs are checked at the entry point.
