Where you are

Inside a protected Sahyadri forest

The Vasota trek runs through the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Sahyadri landscape in the Western Ghats — a UNESCO-recognised biodiversity hotspot. This is real, dense deciduous and semi-evergreen jungle: tall canopy, birdsong, and the genuine feeling of being deep in the forest rather than on a manicured trail. Because access is by boat and entry is regulated, the area stays remarkably undisturbed.

To be clear about what this is: it is a guided jungle trek and boat experience, not a vehicle game-drive safari. The pleasure here is the forest itself — the walk, the canopy, the lake, and the chance of birds and the occasional sign of larger wildlife — all done responsibly inside a protected sanctuary.

Doing it responsibly

Permits, guides, and leaving no trace

Entry needs Forest Department permission and a photo ID for every visitor, and a guide is mandatory — rules that exist to protect both you and the sanctuary. We arrange the permissions and the boat, brief every group, and ask everyone to carry out what they carry in. Keeping the jungle clean and quiet is the only way trips like this stay open.

  5. Stop 05

    Vasota Fort

The summit ruins and the long valley views from the Babu Kada cliff edge.

  6. Stop 06

    Lakeside camp

Back to camp for a bonfire, dinner and a night under the stars — on overnight packages.

Why this trip

The lake crossing is the difference

Most operators sell a trek. Ours starts with a boat ride across the Shivsagar backwaters into a forest with no road in — a journey you simply can’t do on your own without the boat, the permit and a guide. We put all three together so you can focus on the trail and the view from the top.

~6 kmjungle trail to the fort
~40 minboat across the backwaters
100%permits & guide arranged
  • Forest permissions, sorted

  • Certified local guides

A guide who knows every turn of the trail, the wildlife, and the safe pace for your group.

  • Authentic Maharashtrian food

Veg and non-veg meals at the lakeside camp — not packaged catering, but real local cooking.

Good to know

Questions before you book

Anything not covered here? Ask on WhatsApp — we reply with honest, specific answers.

When is the best time to do the Vasota Fort trek?

The trek is open roughly from October to May, with the cool, clear months of November to February being ideal. The Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and the trek route stay closed during the monsoon (mid-June to September). We confirm the current opening status on WhatsApp before every booking.

How hard is the trek? Can beginners do it?

It is a moderate jungle trek of roughly 6 km one way from the boat drop-off to the fort, with a steady climb near the top. Reasonably fit beginners manage it comfortably with a guide and a steady pace. We brief every group on the day and keep the pace to the slowest walker.

How does the boat access work?

The trek starts from Bamnoli, where you board a launch boat across the Shivsagar backwaters of the Koyna reservoir. The crossing drops you at the forest trail-head. We arrange the boat as part of every package, so you do not need to organise it separately.

Do I need a permit or ID proof?

Yes — Vasota lies inside a protected sanctuary, so the Forest Department requires entry permission and a valid government photo ID for every trekker. We handle the permission paperwork; you only need to carry your original ID on the day. Share names and ID details with us in advance so we can pre-arrange entry.

Is the trip suitable for children and families?

The Camp + Boating package and the lakeside camp are family-friendly and great for children. The full fort trek involves a long forest walk and climb, so it suits older children and adults; we will advise you honestly based on your group when you enquire.

What's included and what should I carry?

Packages include the boat, forest permission, a certified guide, meals as listed, and camping where applicable. Carry sturdy shoes, a water bottle, a cap, basic medicines, a torch for camping, and your original ID. We send a full pre-arrival checklist on WhatsApp after you confirm.

What happens if the weather turns or the trek is closed?

Safety comes first. If the Forest Department closes the route or weather makes the boat crossing unsafe, we will tell you in advance and reschedule your dates or adjust the plan. We never run the trip in unsafe conditions.

How do I confirm a date and pay?

Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the package, price, and a small advance to lock your slot. The balance is settled at the base point. Quick human confirmation is the whole point — most enquiries are answered the same day.
