The Vasota trek runs through the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Sahyadri landscape in the Western Ghats — a UNESCO-recognised biodiversity hotspot. This is real, dense deciduous and semi-evergreen jungle: tall canopy, birdsong, and the genuine feeling of being deep in the forest rather than on a manicured trail. Because access is by boat and entry is regulated, the area stays remarkably undisturbed.

To be clear about what this is: it is a guided jungle trek and boat experience, not a vehicle game-drive safari. The pleasure here is the forest itself — the walk, the canopy, the lake, and the chance of birds and the occasional sign of larger wildlife — all done responsibly inside a protected sanctuary.

When is the best time to do the Vasota Fort trek?

The trek is open roughly from October to May, with the cool, clear months of November to February being ideal. The Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and the trek route stay closed during the monsoon (mid-June to September). We confirm the current opening status on WhatsApp before every booking.

How hard is the trek? Can beginners do it?

It is a jungle trek of roughly 6 km one way from the boat drop-off to the fort, walked at an easy, guided pace. Most people manage it comfortably — we brief every group on the day and keep the pace to the slowest walker, so it works well even for first-time trekkers.

How does the boat access work?

The trek starts from Bamnoli, where you board a launch boat across the Shivsagar backwaters of the Koyna reservoir. The crossing drops you at the forest trail-head. We arrange the boat as part of every package, so you do not need to organise it separately.

Do I need a permit or ID proof?

Vasota lies inside a protected sanctuary, so Forest Department entry permission is required. Our host takes care of this when you reach Bamnoli — there is nothing you need to arrange or send us in advance.

Is the trip suitable for children and families?

The Camp + Boating package and the lakeside camp are family-friendly and great for children. The full fort trek is a longer forest walk best suited to older children and adults; we will advise you honestly based on your group when you enquire.

What's included and what should I carry?

Packages include the boat, forest permission, a guide, meals as listed, and camping where applicable. We recommend carrying sturdy shoes, a water bottle, a cap, basic medicines and any personal trekking accessories you prefer — camp lighting and the rest is handled by our host. We send a full pre-arrival checklist on WhatsApp after you confirm.

What happens if the weather turns or the trek is closed?

Safety comes first. If the Forest Department closes the route or weather makes the boat crossing unsafe, we will tell you in advance and reschedule your dates or adjust the plan. We never run the trip in unsafe conditions.
