The camp

A managed jungle camp on the water's edge

Our camp sits beside the Shivsagar backwaters near Bamnoli and Tapola, on the calmer side of the Koyna reservoir. Tents are pitched, dinner is cooked fresh, and the evening runs the way a good camp should — a bonfire, music, simple games, and a sky with actual stars in it. In the morning there is tea and breakfast before you decide how active the day gets.

It is fully managed end to end. You do not haul gear, hunt for firewood, or organise boats; you arrive, settle in, and let the evening unfold. That makes it a genuinely good fit for families and first-time campers, not just hardened trekkers.

Two ways to do it

With the fort trek, or just the lake

If you want the full adventure, the Camp + Trek trip pairs the overnight camp with the next-day boat-and-jungle trek up to Vasota Fort. If you would rather keep things easy — a lake, a boat ride, a bonfire and a slow checkout — the Camp + Boating trip skips the summit climb entirely. Same camp, two very different mornings.

Boating on Shivsagar

The backwaters are the whole point

Shivsagar is the long reservoir behind the Koyna dam, ringed by forested hills and, for most of the year, glass-calm. The boat ride is both how you reach the trek and an experience in its own right — early light on the water, hills folding into the distance, and the kind of quiet that makes the drive out here worth it.

Good to know

Questions before you book

Anything not covered here? Ask on WhatsApp — we reply with honest, specific answers.

When is the best time to do the Vasota Fort trek?

The trek is open roughly from October to May, with the cool, clear months of November to February being ideal. The Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and the trek route stay closed during the monsoon (mid-June to September). We confirm the current opening status on WhatsApp before every booking.

How hard is the trek? Can beginners do it?

It is a moderate jungle trek of roughly 6 km one way from the boat drop-off to the fort, with a steady climb near the top. Reasonably fit beginners manage it comfortably with a guide and a steady pace. We brief every group on the day and keep the pace to the slowest walker.

How does the boat access work?

The trek starts from Bamnoli, where you board a launch boat across the Shivsagar backwaters of the Koyna reservoir. The crossing drops you at the forest trail-head. We arrange the boat as part of every package, so you do not need to organise it separately.

Do I need a permit or ID proof?

Yes — Vasota lies inside a protected sanctuary, so the Forest Department requires entry permission and a valid government photo ID for every trekker. We handle the permission paperwork; you only need to carry your original ID on the day. Share names and ID details with us in advance so we can pre-arrange entry.

Is the trip suitable for children and families?

The Camp + Boating package and the lakeside camp are family-friendly and great for children. The full fort trek involves a long forest walk and climb, so it suits older children and adults; we will advise you honestly based on your group when you enquire.

What's included and what should I carry?

Packages include the boat, forest permission, a certified guide, meals as listed, and camping where applicable. Carry sturdy shoes, a water bottle, a cap, basic medicines, a torch for camping, and your original ID. We send a full pre-arrival checklist on WhatsApp after you confirm.

What happens if the weather turns or the trek is closed?

Safety comes first. If the Forest Department closes the route or weather makes the boat crossing unsafe, we will tell you in advance and reschedule your dates or adjust the plan. We never run the trip in unsafe conditions.

How do I confirm a date and pay?

Message us on WhatsApp with your date and group size. We reply with the package, price, and a small advance to lock your slot. The balance is settled at the base point. Quick human confirmation is the whole point — most enquiries are answered the same day.
