What the trek is
A boat, a jungle trail, and a fort lost in the Sahyadris
Vasota — sometimes spelled Basota — is a hill fort deep inside the Koyna Wildlife
Sanctuary, a part of the Sahyadri ranges so dense that the only practical way in is by
water. You start at Bamnoli, board a launch boat, and cross the
Shivsagar backwaters of the Koyna reservoir. The boat drops you at a forest trail-head,
and from there it is a guided walk through genuine jungle up to the fort.
The reward at the top is the kind of view people travel for: the still, blue reach of
Shivsagar on one side and an unbroken carpet of forest on the other, with the old fort
walls and a small temple holding the summit. Because the whole area is protected, it has
stayed quiet and wild in a way few accessible treks in Maharashtra still are.
Trail length ~6 km one way from the boat drop
Grade Moderate — steady climb near the top
Access Launch boat across Shivsagar from Bamnoli
Season October to May (closed in monsoon)
Permit Forest entry permission + original photo ID
Time Full day; start early from the base
How hard it is
Moderate — and very doable with a guide
The trail runs roughly 6 km one way from the boat drop-off to the fort.
Most of it is a steady forest walk; the climb steepens near the summit. Reasonably fit
beginners manage it comfortably as long as the pace is sensible — which is exactly why we
keep every group with a certified guide and walk to the speed of the slowest person.
Start early, carry water, and you will be back at the boat with time to spare.
Permits & safety
It is a protected sanctuary — so paperwork matters
Vasota sits inside a Forest Department sanctuary, which means entry permission and a valid
government photo ID are mandatory for every trekker, and guides are required. We handle the
permission paperwork and the boat; you carry your original ID on the day and share names in
advance so we can pre-arrange entry. The route closes in the monsoon (mid-June to September)
and during any Forest Department restriction — we confirm the live opening status on
WhatsApp before every booking and never run the trip in unsafe conditions.
