Shivsagar Boating Guide: The Backwater Crossing to Vasota

Launch boat travelling across the Shivsagar backwaters to Vasota

Ask returning trekkers for their strongest memory of Vasota and half of them will say the fort — the other half will say the boat. The Shivsagar crossing is not a transfer. It is the opening chapter of the trip.

What it is

Shivsagar is the vast reservoir behind the Koyna dam, ringed by forested Sahyadri hills. From the Bamnoli jetty you board a launch boat — a sturdy, covered motor launch run by licensed local operators — and cross open backwaters to the forest trail-head where the trek begins. The same boats serve the camping trips, where the ride is a leisurely experience rather than a commute.

What to expect on board

  • Seating: bench seating under a canopy. Sit on the sides for the views, in the middle if you burn easily.
  • Wind and spray: pleasant, not drenching. A light layer helps on winter mornings.
  • Views: forested hills folding into the distance, still blue water, and — if you are lucky — birds of prey circling the ridges.
  • Phones/cameras: the crossing is the best photography of the whole trip. Keep gear in a zip pouch; spray is light but real.

Safety, honestly

The launches are stable, licensed boats on a calm reservoir — not speedboats, not country canoes. Life jackets are available; ask the crew if you want one, especially for children. Crossings run in daylight and fair weather only. If wind or water conditions look wrong, we cancel the crossing — no debate, no refund drama, reschedule instead. In monsoon months there are no crossings at all.

Best light for the ride

  • Early morning: glass-calm water, mist on the far shore, soft gold light. This is the classic — and why day treks start early.
  • Late afternoon: warm side-light on the hills, great for portraits.
  • Midday: bright and hot; fine in winter, bring a cap and sunglasses in summer.

Boating without the trek?

Absolutely — that is the Camp + Boating trip. A relaxed ride, time to actually look at the water instead of watching the clock, plus the lakeside camp and bonfire. Families with small kids consistently rate this as the highlight of their weekend.
